Police in Katwe are investigating a harrowing incident in which residents mobbed to death three armed robbers in Makindye Ssabagabo on Thursday.
Reports indicate that on Thursday at approximately 6pm in Ndejje Kibutika Village, Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District, armed robbers attacked a field sales team of Shana Distributors Ltd, Kikuubo and robbed them of cash at gun point.
According to KMP deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the employees, Haruna Galabuzi (driver), Patricia Babirye (salesperson), and Henry Mfitumukiza (offloader), were ambushed by armed assailants during routine product distribution and demanded money. However, when the victims hesitated, the assailants turned to violence.
“Despite warning shots, the assailants shot Patricia Babirye in the leg, subsequently taking a substantial amount of money, approximately 20 million Ugandan shillings, from the vehicle.,” Owoyesigyire said
The criminals fled on a motorcycle with registration UES 820K.
However, as the victims raised an alarm, a pursuit ensued, leading to the robbers abandoning the motorcycle.
It is said that a group of local residents and riders in Namasuba apprehended the suspects, resulting in a confrontation. They beat up the suspects and two of them succumbed to injuries at the scene, while another passed away upon arrival at Mulago Hospital.
Police have identified two of the deceased robbers as Mark Bakka and Brian Ssemanda from their identification and voters cards which they posed.
The alleged robbery weapon was recovered and has been secured as evidence but the stolen cash has not been recovered, as it is believed to have been taken by members of the public during the confrontation.
The injured victims are currently receiving medical attention, and their detailed statements on the incident have been documented by police.
