South Africa’s Minister of International relations and Cooperation, Dr. Naledi Pandor Mandisa, has called for the expansion of the UN security Council to provide a permanent representative from the global south.
Addressing delegates at the ongoing NAM Summit in Kampala, Mandisa emphasized the need for a reformed and equitable global governance system. characterized by respect for the United Nations’ Charter and settlement of disputes by peaceful means.
“We need a system that is not used as a tool by powerful countries,” she submitted while addressing delegates at the ongoing NAM Summit in Kampala
She said the UN Security Council should be expanded to include countries from Africa and guard against the selective application of international law and promote fundamental respect for human rights.
Dr. Mandisa’s call resonates with a long-standing demand from many developing nations for greater representation in international decision-making bodies. The current composition of the Security Council, with five permanent members holding veto power, has been criticized as undemocratic and reflecting a power structure outdated by the realities of the 21st century.
Mandisa also called for the immediate and complete ceasefire in the ongoing war in Gaza. “We also call for release of captives by Hamas,” she said.
