Former Makerere University guild president Robert Maseruka was among the 16 more individuals arrested during yesterday’s anti-corruption protests arraigned before Buganda Road Magistrate’s Court today.
Grade One Magistrate Caroline Kyoshabire read a charge of disorderly conduct against the accused persons.
All but Brian Magara pleaded not guilty.
However, Magara did not walk to freedom as he might have wished in pleading guilty – he will spend time on remand as well.
The prosecution led by Ivan Kyazze alleges that the accused disrupted public order during their march to parliament.
The march was staged by activists protesting alleged widespread corruption in various government agencies.
Our reporter Josephine Namakumbi in court said defense attorney George Musisi argued for bail, but Magistrate Kyoshabire denied the request, citing incomplete case files.
“The magistrate stressed that they would hear the case only if the prosecution presents complete files for each accused,” Namakumbi added.
The accused remain in custody until their next court appearance on Monday, July 29.
Following the court proceedings, friends, relatives, and supporters of the accused voiced their condemnation of corruption.
Lawyer Musisi, MP Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo, and Nakawa Speaker Godfrey Luyombya all spoke out against the issue.
These joined the over 50 protestants who were remanded yesterday after they were arrested protesting in different parts of Kampala.
